All About Stage Trusses: Do You Really Know Them?

Stage truss is the structural framework used to support lighting, LED screens, speakers, scenic elements and roof systems at concerts, exhibitions, festivals and commercial events.
A truss may look simple from the audience area, but its performance depends on the alloy, tube dimensions, joint design, span, support points and equipment loads. Understanding these details helps event companies select a system that is practical to transport, assemble and reuse.
What Is a Stage Truss?
A stage truss is made from straight aluminum tubes connected by diagonal braces. The repeated triangular geometry helps transfer forces through the structure. Sections can be joined to form beams, towers, grids, arches and roof systems.
6061-T6 and 6082-T6 aluminum alloys are both used in truss manufacturing. 6061-T6 is a practical option for many standard applications. 6082-T6 generally offers higher strength and is often selected for larger or heavier-duty structures. The final capacity still depends on the complete specification.
Common Stage Truss Shapes
Square box truss is widely used for lighting grids, stage roofs, LED support and exhibition structures. Its four main chords provide convenient mounting positions and good resistance in different directions.
Triangle truss is suitable for many lighting and display applications where lower weight and a distinct shape are useful. Ladder truss is normally selected for lighter fixtures, banners and simple horizontal frames.
Circle and curved truss can form lighting rings, arches, entrances and customized stage designs. Curved systems are usually divided into sections for transport and connected at the event site.
Spigot Truss and Bolt Truss Connections
Spigot truss uses tapered pins and R-clips. It is fast to assemble and practical for rental companies that repeatedly build and dismantle event structures.
Bolt truss uses plates and bolts to connect sections. It is common in exhibition booths, display structures and planned layouts. Connection dimensions from different manufacturers are not automatically interchangeable, so customers adding new sections to existing inventory should provide accurate measurements or a sample.

Stage truss can be used for overhead lighting, LED screen frames, line array support, exhibition booths, entrance arches, camera structures and temporary roofs. The same standard sections may be rearranged for different projects when the new layout is checked properly.

A structure should never be selected only by its outside dimensions. Tube diameter, wall thickness, alloy grade, welding, span and load positions all affect performance.
